Recently published in the newsletter of the University Cattolica del Sacro Cuore the contribution by Professor Alan M.Goldberg Ph.D. eminent and worldwide known Professor of Toxicology of the Bloomberg School of Public Health Principal, Global Food Ethics Johns Hopkins University.

He highlighted in his manuscript how cruel is an industrial farm animal production when are missing the criteria of the EU welfare guidelines. The challenge worldwide should be changing the density of animals raised together as first step. It is then necessary a more powerful approach towards animal welfare incorporating as a minimum the 5 freedoms – access to clean and nutritious foods, freedom from distress, pain and fear, and the ability to express natural behaviours.

That means going much further with the sustainable development of the animal farm production. In synthesis, Alan Goldberg criticizes the general management of farm production, indeed considering the European work in progress such as the development and implementation of the welfare guideline the reference for future challenge of the sector.
